U Mumba TT went one better than last year, defeating Dabang Delhi TTC 5-2 to clinch its maiden UTT Juniors title at the Dr Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Indoor Stadium.
The triumph was built around the impressive performances of top draft pick Ahona Ray and a promising youngster, Somdev Sengupta. While Somdev gave U Mumba the early momentum with a victory over Himon Mondal, he teamed up with Ahona to win a hard-fought mixed doubles contest to put the team in command.
Ahona then completed the job in emphatic fashion, brushing aside Sreejani Chakraborty 11-4 in the decisive Girls’ Singles match to seal the title.
The victory capped another memorable week for Ahona, who had arrived in Goa fresh from winning the Under-15 girls’ singles crown at the WTT Youth Star Contender in Doha.
