Vikramjit Singh, a wanted accused in the 2023 Ajnala police station clash and an activist of Waris Punjab De, was arrested by the Uttar Pradesh Police while allegedly trying to enter India illegally from Nepal.

The police also arrested a US citizen of Punjab origin, identified as Manveer Singh.

Three others, accused of facilitating their illegal entry into India, were also nabbed.

The arrests came to light after the Uttar Pradesh Police shared the information with the Amritsar Rural Police.

Vikramjit had been evading arrest for more than two years. During this period, he allegedly remained in hiding at various locations, including Mumbai, Rajasthan, Delhi and Udhampur, before escaping to Kathmandu a year ago.

Confirming the arrests, Uttar Pradesh Superintendent of Police Vishwajeet Srivastava said both men were detained for entering India without valid travel documents.

"Both were detained for entering the country without valid documents. Manveer, a US citizen, was caught during routine checking while trying to enter India without a visa," Srivastava said, adding that neither possessed the required documents.

Vikramjit was among the supporters accompanying Amritpal Singh, then chief of Waris Punjab De and now the MP from Khadoor Sahib, during the protest march to the Ajnala police station in February 2023. The march was organised to secure the release of Amritpal's aide, Lovepreet Singh alias Toofan, who had been arrested in an attempt-to-murder case.

An Amritsar Rural Police official said an active arrest warrant was already pending against Vikramjit. A police team has reached Uttar Pradesh and has taken him into custody after completing the formalities.

Police said Vikramjit was travelling using a fake Aadhaar card.

The Uttar Pradesh Police have registered a case under the Foreigners Act and other relevant laws.
