Lionel Messi has revealed that he was frustrated with himself for the penalty miss in the FIFA World Cup win over Egypt. He admitted that the tears after the final whistle were because he was relieved with the win.
Speaking to the media after the match, Messi said that the way he took the penalty was wrong, and believes that the game would have panned out differently if he had scored. He said:
Talking once again about the penalty, Messi added that he felt as though he had let his teammates down on the pitch and said:
Lionel Messi had his penalty saved by Mostafa Shoubir when they were trailing 1-0. Egypt went on to take a 2-0 lead, before the Argentina captain assisted Cristian Romero in the 79th minute to make it 2-1.
The Inter Miami captain went on to score three minutes later, making it 2-2. It was his eight goal of the tournament, which also made it nine successive FIFA World Cup matches in which he has scored.
Enzo Fernandez won the match for Argentina in the 93rd minute, scoring from a header on a counter-attack.
Argentina will take on Switzerland in the next FIFA World Cup quarterfinal. Lionel Messi-led side will travel to Kansas for the game, which will take place on July 11.
