The Commonwealth Games 2026 is set to begin on Thursday, July 23. The upcoming iteration is set to be held in Glasgow, Scotland.
Although initially the organising committee was keen on bringing back Clyde (an anthropomorphic thistle), the 2014 mascot, the idea was later dumped as 76 children – christened “Mascot Makers" – from 24 schools in Glasgow were tasked with the job.
They eventually came up with Finnie. While her name originated from the Finnieston Crane, a non-operational crane in the centre of Glasgow, she was chosen to be a unicorn, as it is the national animal of the country.
Finnie’s horn is a traffic cone that pays homage to a Scottish tradition of putting traffic cones on statues. She also wears a tartan design with a grey base and pink, blue, and purple threads.
Finnie also has a friendship bracelet designed by the “Mascot Makers” on her left wrist and an earring that bears resemblance to the Glasgow coat of arms.
She was unveiled on July 23, 2025, exactly a year before the Games were set to start.
“Some call me the hype-master because I love making people smile, cheering from the sidelines and getting the crowd going. I can feel when they’re buzzing, and I can tell when they need a boost. If the energy’s dipping, I’m there with a grin, a wave, maybe even a wee dance. If it’s tense, I’ll help lift the nerves. I’m there for the big cheers, the quiet moments and everything in between. Whatever the mood is, I help turn it into something magic. I’ll cheer for every single athlete, in every sport, from every country. If someone’s down, I’m the one with an arm around their shoulder. If things go quiet, I’m the one starting the clap. If it’s getting close to a big moment, I’ve probably already started bouncing,” Finnie was quoted as saying on the official CWG website.
