The FIFA World Cup 2026 final between Argentina and Spain in New Jersey on Sunday looks set to go into a penalty shootout after both teams failed to score through normal time.
If the sides cannot find the back of the net in the two periods of extra time, the summit clash will be decided by penalties for just the fourth time in history.
Argentina have previously been dragged into extra time twice this World Cup, against Cape Verde in the round of 32 and Switzerland in the quartefinal, but managed to find a winning goal on both occasions.
Argentina has faced the penalty shootout seven times at the FIFA World Cup and ended up winning six times. Across all competitions, Argentina has won 13 out of 19 shootouts.
