Switzerland and Colombia were locked in a 0-0 draw at the end of regulation time in their Round-of-16 match in Vancouver on Tuesday.
The match will now head into 30 minutes of extra time. If no winner emerges, a penalty shootout will decide which team faces Argentina in the quarterfinals.
Switzerland has been involved in six penalty shootouts across all competitions and won just once.
It has gone to a shootout in a World Cup match only once, losing 3-0 to Ukraine in 2006.
