The FIFA World Cup 2026 final between Argentina and Spain in New Jersey on Sunday looks set to go into a penalty shootout after both teams failed to score through normal time.
If the sides cannot find the back of the net in the two periods of extra time, the summit clash will be decided by penalties for just the fourth time in history.
Spain will look to custodian Unai Simon to be the hero of the day in case the match goes into the tiebreak.
The Athletic Club goalkeeper has faced 45 penalties in his senior career and has managed to save eight of them. Seven of his saves have come in La Liga, while one came during UEFA Euro 2024 when he denied Croatia’s Bruno Petkovic from the spot.
He is yet to play in a penalty shootout at the World Cup.
