The Monsoon Session of Parliament begins today (July 20, 2026) and will conclude on August 13. On April 17, the Constitution (131st Amendment) Bill, which sought to redistribute Lok Sabha seats based on the 2011 Census and facilitate the implementation of women’s reservation, was defeated by a united Opposition. In a House where 528 members were present and voting, 298 voted in favour of the Bill, falling short of the required two-thirds majority.

Speculation is rife that the government could revive the legislation, aided by the changed composition of the Lok Sabha following splits in the Trinamool Congress and Shiv Sena (UBT). But the government has not listed these bills in the preliminary agenda published for the Monsoon Session.
