Norway scored the first goal of the FIFA World Cup 2026 quarterfinal against England in Miami on Saturday, with Andreas Schjelderup breaching the English defence.

Schjelderup was on the left side of the England penalty box in the 36th minute and he smashed the ball square. The attempt seemed like a cross aimed Erling Haaland in the middle but the ball creeped into the goal at the far post.

The 22-year-old plays for Portuguese side Benfica and had a breakthrough year last season, where he scored 11 goals and assisted another six. He moved to the side in 2024 and has scored 15 goals in 83 games. The club currently has a €100 million release clause in place for him, highlighting the importance it puts on the winger.

His professional career started at Danish side Nordsjaelland, for which he made 94 appearances across two spells. His youth career was split across Nordsjaelland and Norwegian side Bodo/Glimt.

For Norway, this was just his second goal in his 19th appearance. He has also played for the Under-15, Under-19, and Under-21 sides for his nation.

However, Norwegian was also in the headlines last year for the wrong reasons. In November 2025, he was convicted for sharing a sexual video of a minor on a social media platform. He was given a two-week suspended jail sentence for the offence.
