Lionel Messi missed his second penalty of FIFA World Cup 2026, with goalkeeper Mostafa Shobeir diving to his left to deny the chance during the Round-of-16 match between Argentina and Egypt in Atlanta.
This was Shobeir’s second penalty save in this World Cup, having blocked a spot kick from Mehdi Taremi of Iran during the group stage. He is only the fourth goalkeeper, and the first African, to save two spot kicks at a single World Cup edition.
The penalty save was not his only contribution though. Shobeir denied Alexis MacAllister and Julian Alvarez from close range to keep Egypt ahead in the first half.
Shobeir has been playing for Egyptian side Al Ahly since 2020 and has made 63 appearances for the club. For the national side, he has played 14 times.
He is the son of Ahmed Shobeir, who played for Egypt during the 1990 World Cup. He was influential in Egypt securing two draws through the group stage, against the Netherlands and Ireland.
