New Delhi: Bengali actress Sreelekha Mitra got into legal trouble after joining a student protest in Kolkata on Friday (July 24). Police complaints were made against her at several stations, alleging that she possessed a derogatory picture of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
A crowd came out on the streets of Kolkata on Friday to protest the NEET exam paper leak and demand that Dharmendra Pradhan step down from his post. Mitra participated in the protest too, where she was reportedly photographed with a sign that showed a disrespectful image of PM Modi.
BJP leader Keya Ghosh filed a complaint against Sreelekha Mitra at Anandapur Police Station on Sunday (July 26). Reports also states that complaints were made against her at different police stations in several districts, including the Bidhannagar Cyber Crime Police Station.
“A complaint has been filed against actress Sreelekha Mitra for displaying a distasteful poster targeting the Prime Minister. This FIR has been lodged over the insult of the country’s Prime Minister. Sreelekha Mitra must be arrested as soon as possible,” Ghosh said.
“If you wish to arrest me, then arrest me; if you wish to send me to the gallows, then send me to the gallows. I believe there will be a movement against this as well. I forgot to bring my spectacles and only had my sunglasses with me,” Mitra said in a video on her social media page following the allegations.
She further added that police were baton-charging at that time, which prompted her to pose quickly with the controversial poster without checking the image imprinted on it.
Sreelekha Mitra was born on 30 August 1972. She is an Indian actress, director, and politician who is well known for her work in Bengali cinema and television. She has won both a BFJA Award and an Anandalok Award. Mitra is best known for her roles in films like Hothat Brishti (1998), Kantatar (2006), Aschorjo Prodip (2013), Swade Ahlade (2015), Choukath (2015), Rainbow Jelly (2018), and Mayanagar (2021).
Her very first acting job was in Balikar Prem, a Bengali TV series directed by Dulal Lahiri. She became popular for playing the role of Nabanita in the 1996 Bengali TV series Trishna, directed by Anindya Sarkar. After appearing in several movies, her big career breakthrough came with Basu Chatterjee’s Hothat Brishti (1998), which was a huge hit at the box office. Even though the movie was successful, Mitra’s career did not reach major new heights, which she said was an unwanted result of nepotism in the Bengali film industry.
She received a BFJA Award and an Anandalok Award for her role in Bappaditya Bandopadhyay’s Kantatar (2006). In that movie, she played Sudha, an illegal immigrant who moves from one man to another and from one religion to another in search of love.
Mitra also has a long and successful career on television. Some of her well-known telefilms include Dwicharini, Raja Opera, Teen Satyi, Dui Purush, Teen Purush, and Ami Shey O Anu. Some of her popular television series include Trishna, Ei To Jiban, Pratibimba, Bhanga Gorar Khela, Probahini Ei Samay, and Bandhan. Additionally, she served as a judge on the Bengali stand-up comedy show Mirakkel.
