Argentina is set to take on Switzerland in the FIFA World Cup 2026 quarterfinal stage, with the match set to be held in the Kansas City Stadium on Saturday.
Argentina comes into the fixture after a 3-2 victory over Egypt in the Round of 16. While the match had its controversies, it also featured a remarkable comeback by Argentina. Goals from Cristian Romero, Lionel Messi, and Enzo Fernandez saw the side over the line.
This appearance in the quarterfinal matches Switzerland’s best-ever tournament finish and its first quarterfinal appearance this century. The Swiss reached the quarterfinal stage in 1934, 1938, and 1954 before this tournament.
The Argentina vs Switzerland FIFA World Cup 2026 match will be officiated by Portuguese referee Joao Pinheiro.
Pinheiro is one of the younger referees at this edition of the tournament. The 38-year-old made his debut in August 2014 in the Portuguese second division, and became a regular official in the league from his first year itself. He has been a FIFA-listed referee since 2016 and is part of the UEFA Elite Group of referees. He regularly takes charge of Portuguese first division and UEFA Champions League matches.
This tournament has been Pinheiro’s first FIFA World Cup, and he has taken charge of one group stage game and one Round of 32 game so far.
Throughout his career, Pinheiro has taken charge of 442 matches, awarding 1985 yellow cards (average 4.49 per match) and 84 red cards (average 0.19 per match).
Notably, Pinheiro has taken charge of the 2025-26 UEFA Super Cup final between Tottenham Hotspur and PSG. He also took charge of the 2025-26 UEFA Champions League semifinal between Bayern Munich and PSG. His performance in the game was criticised by Bayern CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen, who noted Pinheiro’s inexperience and questioned the decision to let him officiate the fixture.
