Kirandeep Kaur, a 24-year-old woman from Piddi village in Punjab's Tarn Taran district, was allegedly stabbed to death in England in what UK police are investigating as a murder.
The victim, who had moved to the United Kingdom nearly two years ago on a student visa, was later granted a work permit and had been living and working there.
According to the Metropolitan Police, officers were called to a property on Uxbridge Road in Hayes at around 7:55 am on Sunday, July 12, after receiving reports of a stabbing.
Police and the London Ambulance Service found Kirandeep Kaur with multiple stab injuries. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
A man in his 20s was also found outside the property with stab injuries. He remains in hospital, and police said his injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.
Kirandeep belonged to Piddi village in Tarn Taran district of Punjab. Her parents, Sukhdev Singh and Baljit Kaur, said they had sold their agricultural land to send their daughter to England on a student visa nearly two years ago in the hope of securing her a better future.
After completing her studies, Kirandeep obtained a work permit and had started working in the UK, they said.
Kirandeep's parents alleged that the incident took place while she was asleep in her room on Sunday morning. According to them, an unidentified assailant entered the room and attacked her with a sharp-edged weapon, inflicting multiple stab wounds that proved fatal.
The family has appealed to the Government of India to help bring her body back to her native village for the last rites.
The Metropolitan Police have charged Daniel Sean James, 44, of Mercer Place, Pinner, with murder, attempted murder and possession of a bladed article.
He was charged on July 13, and appeared before Willesden Magistrates' Court on July 14. The investigation into the incident is on going.
