New Delhi: There is a fascinating story behind Gehri Chaal, the 1973 film that brought Jeetendra and Amitabh Bachchan together, and, remarkably, the only film they ever did together.
In an exclusive conversation with News9 Digital, film historian Dilip Thakur talked about the film as it completed 53 years. Thakur recalled one of his conversations with Jeetendra, where he asked why he and Amitabh Bachchan never worked again after Gehri Chaal and said that the actor’s answer was “quite revealing”.
“I remember asking Jeetendra about this when we were in Hyderabad during the shooting of a film. Since we were there as members of the media, there were opportunities to interact with the actors, and I asked him a simple question: “You and Amitabh Bachchan have worked together only once. How come you never got another opportunity?” Thakur told us.
He added, “Jeetendra’s answer was quite revealing. He explained that after Gehri Chaal, their careers gradually moved in completely different directions. Amitabh Bachchan became increasingly involved with action-oriented films, while Jeetendra was busy with social and family-oriented cinema. Then Jeetendra became involved with films being made in the South, working with filmmakers such as K. Raghavendra Rao and Dasari Narayana Rao.And somehow, another opportunity never came.”
It is interesting to look back at Jeetendra’s filmography during those years. He worked with several major stars in multi-starrers, including Vinod Mehra and Sanjeev Kumar, but Amitabh Bachchan never became part of those combinations. Their professional paths simply did not cross again.
That makes Gehri Chaal particularly intriguing. Two of the biggest stars of Hindi cinema came together once, and only once.
Directed by CV Sridhar, Gehri Chaal featured Jeetendra, Amitabh Bachchan and Hema Malini. The film belongs to that fascinating period of the early 1970s when Amitabh was still establishing himself as a major star, while Jeetendra was already one of the industry’s leading names.
Looking back today, Gehri Chaal becomes a reminder of how unpredictable the history of Hindi cinema can be. Sometimes two actors can share tremendous screen presence and chemistry, yet circumstances, career choices and the changing nature of the industry can ensure that they never work together again.
Jeetendra and Amitabh Bachchan were one such combination. They met once on screen. After that, their careers took different roads, and the second opportunity simply never came.
