Switzerland player Breel Embolo was sent off during the FIFA World Cup 2026 quarterfinal match against Argentina in Kansas City on Saturday.

The attacker was found guilty of simulation in the 72nd minute which got him a yellow card. Since he was already booked earlier in the game, the second yellow meant he had to leave the game.

The referee, Joao Pinheiro of Portugal, had initially booked Leandro Paredes for a foul on Embolo on the right wing.

However, upon advice from the Video Assistant Referee, he moved to the on-field monitor to have another look at the incident. The replays showed Embolo diving before any contact with Paredes.

As a result, Pinheiro revoked the yellow card given to Paredes and booked Embolo instead. The 29-year-old had already been in the referee’s book in the 44th minute, for a dangerous foul on Paredes.
