Mostafa Ziko scored a second goal for Egypt against Argentina in the 58th minute but had it ruled out by the referee during its Round-of-16 match in Atlanta on Tuesday. The goal was ruled out because Marwan Ateya had stamped on Lisandro Martinez during the build-up. The foul won Egypt the ball, from where Haissem Hassan went on a run down the right wing before playing a defence-piercing pass to Ziko. The Egypt forward was one-on-one with Emiliano Martinez and chipped the ball over the Argentina goalkeeper to calmly convert the chance. However, referee Francois Letexier was told by the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) to check the play on the pitchside monitor, and he eventually reversed the decision. Ziko was not to be denied a second time as, just six minutes later, he struck again on a counter-attack to give Egypt a two-goal lead. But even this was to no avail as Argentina scored three goals in 14 minutes to complete a remarkable 3-2 comeback win and advance to the quarterfinals.
