A 28-year-old woman and her six-month-old daughter were killed after a container lorry allegedly rammed the two-wheeler they were travelling on near the Madhavaram Roundabout in Chennai on Saturday.
The woman was identified as Sharmila, 28, a homemaker. Her husband, Nithyanandham, 34, who works at a private mobile phone company near Sriperumbudur, was riding the motorcycle. The family was travelling from their residence in Puzhal to Sharmila’s mother’s house in Kodungaiyur when the accident took place.
According to the Madhavaram Traffic Investigation Wing police, the container lorry was proceeding from Madhavaram towards Ennore when it allegedly collided with the motorcycle near the roundabout.
In the impact, Sharmila and the infant were thrown onto the road, following which they were run over by the heavy vehicle. Both sustained severe head injuries and died on the spot. Nithyanandham, who was wearing a helmet, suffered injuries but survived.
On receiving information, the police and ambulance personnel rushed to the scene and shifted all three to Government Stanley Medical College Hospital. Doctors declared Sharmila and the infant brought dead, while Nithyanandham is undergoing treatment.
