The Woolmark Company is encouraging use of wool in sportswear and casual wear production in India, said Ajay Pradhan, its India country manager.
There are 60 licensed users of Woolmark in India. About 6% of the 255 million kg of Merino wool produced in Australia is imported by India while China imports close to 85%. In India, wool is predominantly used for production of suits, jackets, and sweaters. However, in the recent years, its use in sportswear and casual wear is on the rise. It is used as blends with nylon or polyester too, he said.
“We are working to promote wool as a fibre as it is highly breathable,” he added.
From clusters such as Tiruppur and Ludhiana to startups in the athleisure segment, Woolmark Company is working with the stakeholders and organising sessions to promote the use of wool, he said.
