A 31-year-old construction worker from Assam was killed and another worker injured after a material hoist fell from the fifth floor of a building under construction on Taramani Link Road on Friday evening.

The deceased, identified as Ashraful Alam, 31, hailed from Bongaigaon district in Assam. He had been living in Chennai for the past five years and had joined work at the construction site about 15 days ago.

The accident occurred at a six-storey building under construction within the premises of a working women’s hostel in Taramani. According to the police, the hoist, used to lift cement, sand and other construction materials, snapped from its supporting rope at around 5.25 p.m. and crashed to the ground from the fifth floor.

The falling hoist struck Ashraful Alam and another worker, Ishrail, 32, while they were bathing near the building. Both men were rushed to a nearby private hospital.

Ashraful Alam was declared dead on arrival, while Ishrail, who suffered an arm injury, was later referred to the Government Royapettah Hospital for treatment. Ashraful Alam’s body was sent to the Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital for post-mortem.
