Team India all-rounder Axar Patel had a successful outing with the ball in the first ODI against England on Tuesday, July 14. Batting first at Edgbaston, the hosts were bowled out for just 258 in 47.5 overs.
Axar bagged four wickets in the innings, returning figures of 4/62 from 9.5 overs. He first picked up the key wicket of Liam Dawson, who scored 68 runs off 83 balls. It was a crucial blow as he broke a 121-run stand between Dawson and Joe Root for the seventh wicket.
As pacer Gurnoor Brar injured himself and walked out, Axar was handed the ball to bowl the 48th over with England at 257/8. Grabbing the opportunity, the left-arm spinner cleaned up Adil Rashid and Josh Tongue to bundle England out quickly.
Fans praised the all-rounder on social media for his four-wicket haul.
Axar had a nightmare in the final T20I, where he went for 63 runs in four overs and remained wicketless. However, he made an exceptional comeback in the first ODI.

The Men in Blue will back themselves to chase down 259 runs when they walk out to bat in the second innings.
This was the first time that Axar Patel picked up a four-wicket haul in ODIs, thus registering his best figures in the format. His previous best figures in the format before this game were 3/24.
Axa's figures of 4/62 are also the fourth-best by an Indian spinner against England in ODIs, only behind 4/47 by Yuzvendra Chahal (Lord's 2022), 4/28 by Ravindra Jadeja (Cardiff 2014), and 6/25 by Kuldeep Yadav (Nottingham 2018).
He also became only the second Indian spinner to pick four wickets between overs 41 and 50 in an ODI after Jadeja, who achieved the feat against Sri Lanka in 2013.
