WWE reportedly made a massive change to CM Punk's plans before his surprise return on last night's edition of RAW. The Second City Saint captured the Undisputed WWE Championship from Sami Zayn during last night's show in Chicago, Illinois.
According to a report from False Finish, CM Punk was planned to win the title for over a month. The report also disclosed that the veteran was supposed to challenge Cody Rhodes for the title at WrestleMania 43 in Saudi Arabia, but those plans were changed. The promotion is reportedly trying to make SummerSlam a better event than WrestleMania 42 earlier this year.
Cody Rhodes defeated Jey Uso in the main event of this past Friday's episode of SmackDown to become the number one contender for the Undisputed WWE Championship. He was supposed to battle Sami Zayn for the title last night on RAW but was attacked by Gunther during the opening segment of the show.
Punk made his surprise return as Rhodes' replacement and challenged Zayn for the title in the main event of RAW. Punk captured the title from Zayn after connecting with a GTS for the pinfall victory.
Sami Zayn was very unhappy after losing the Undisputed WWE Championship to CM Punk during last night's episode of RAW.
The Last Real Guy appeared to be relieved when he learned that Cody Rhodes was ruled out of the title match on the red brand. However, SmackDown GM Nick Aldis revealed that he had found a replacement, and it led to the return of CM Punk.
Zayn cut a promo backstage following the match and hurled insults at the former AEW star. The former champion suggested that Punk had no business getting a title shot after being on hiatus for months.
It will be fascinating to see how long The Best in the World can hang onto the title moving forward on SmackDown.
