The YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) women leaders on Monday demanded the resignation of Andhra Pradesh Home Minister Vangalapudi Anitha, claiming that the alleged stripping and assault of a woman in Guntur reflected a complete failure of the government to ensure women's safety. The leaders also announced Statewide protests at Ambedkar statues on July 21 (Tuesday) under the banner of the party's women's wing.
A delegation, led by former Minister Vidadala Rajini, YSRCP women's wing president Varudu Kalyani, Guntur city president Shaik Noori Fatima, former ZP chairperson Uppala Harika, former Vijayawada Mayor Rayana Bhagyalakshmi and working president Kakani Poojitha, visited the woman's family at Krishna Babu Colony and assured them of the party's support.
Addressing the media, the leaders claimed that the woman was attacked after refusing to pay ₹10,000 allegedly demanded by a local TDP functionary during borewell repair work outside her house. They claimed the family had approached the police twice before the incident gained public attention through viral videos and accused the authorities of delayed action.
The leaders criticised the government's response, alleging that women were becoming increasingly vulnerable under the present administration. They sought stringent punishment for all those involved, immediate justice for the woman, and accountability from the State government.
They also alleged that earlier complaints and similar incidents had not been dealt with firmly, encouraging such crimes. The YSRCP women's wing said it would continue its agitation until justice was delivered to the woman and her family.
