Ninth seed Yulia Putintseva will lock horns with qualifier Claire Liu in the first round of the Iasi Open 2026.
Putintseva made the second round in Brisbane and Adelaide to begin the year, and advanced to the fourth round of the Australian Open for the first time in her career. She wrapped up her time on hardcourts with second-round appearances at the Indian Wells Open and the Miami Open.
Putintseva didn't progress beyond the second round of any tournament throughout the clay swing. She failed to win even a single match on grass after that. She then dropped down to the WTA 125 level after a first-round exit from Wimbledon. She participated in last week's Nordea Open and lost to eventual champion Paula Badosa in the semifinals.
Liu had to wait until the French Open to taste success on the main tour. She qualified for the tournament and then lost to Maria Sakkari in the second round. She similarly qualified for Wimbledon and progressed to the third round of a Major for the first time.
Coco Gauff eventually brought an end to Liu's run at Wimbledon with a tough three-set win. Liu beat Maria Sara Popa and Ipek Oz in straight sets to book her spot in the main draw of the Iasi Open.
Putintseva leads their rivalry 2-1. Liu won their previous meeting at the Budapest Open 2023 in straight sets.

Putintseva has put together a 21-15 record across all levels this season. She made a successful return to clay after a disappointing grass swing. Her semifinal showing at last week's WTA 125 in Bastad should give her enough confidence to do well here. She improved her record on clay to 9-6 with her result last week.
Liu attained a new career milestone with her first-ever third-round finish at a Major at Wimbledon. She has a 29-13 record across all levels this year, with a 17-6 record on clay. She won an ITF title on the surface in the lead up to the French Open.
The duo met thrice in 2023. Two of those three matches were contested on clay. Putintseva came out on top in Madrid, and Liu had the last laugh a couple of months later in Budapest. Both matches were done and dusted in straight sets.
While Liu has tallied 17 wins on clay this year, none of those were against top 100 players. As such, Putintseva will be favored to win the match, especially in light of her result last week.
Pick: Yulia Putintseva to win in straight sets.
Tip 1: The match will have at least 20 games.
Tip 2: Putintseva to win at least one set with a score of 6-4.
